    Finding Your Inner Strengths

Learning disabilities can cause challenges for both children and adults. Learning new concepts in school or new techniques at work can be frustrating when learning does not come as naturally to you as it seems to for others. Through psychoeducational testing, I can help you learn exactly where your strengths and weaknesses are so that you or your child can learn ways to overcome the struggle. Being diagnosed with a learning disorder can also be a starting point to gain extra school support, for standardized testing, or at work.

    Specializations In Psychoeducational Testing

Dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia are three common learning disabilities that can cause challenges in academics and everyday life. Below are some of the differences between the three:

    • Dyslexia: Dyslexia is when an individual has trouble with reading and language skills.
    • Dysgraphia: Dysgraphia is when an individual has difficulty with spelling and written expression.
    • Dyscalculia: Dyscalculia is when an individual has difficulty with mathematics.

Assessments include several components. They start with an hour interview with parents, or the adults seeking the assessment, to learn more about the difficulties the individual is experiencing. After the interview, I ask parents to complete questionnaires about the child’s emotions and behaviors. I often ask that teachers complete questionnaires as well. It is helpful to gather documents from you at this time, such as report cards or other feedback from teachers. I ask adolescents, teens, and adults to complete questionnaires about their thoughts and emotions as well. Then, we work together doing a variety of activities that help me learn about the strengths and weaknesses of how your (or your child’s) brain functions. This information helps me develop a comprehensive report that will include an accurate diagnosis and a treatment plan. The treatment plan includes several recommendations for the next steps. We meet again for a follow-up visit, at which time we review the report, diagnosis, and recommendations.

Should My Child or I Be Tested?

Is your child having a hard time learning new lessons? Is he or she falling behind in class? Or do they struggle with spelling, writing, or mathematics? Does homework seem to take several hours when in theory it should only take 30 minutes? Does it seem that other students are progressing faster than your child?

As an adult, are you having difficulties learning new tasks at work? Is it difficult to read emails and understand what you’ve read? Does it take you longer to read work-related text than your peers? Are you in college or graduate school and struggling?
